ABOUT BRAND JAPAN

The story does not end
at the object.

BRAND JAPAN presents Japanese craft with the context needed to choose with confidence—maker, place, material, technique, use and care.

OUR ROLE

Closing the distance between a workshop and a life abroad.

BRAND JAPAN Inc. creates places where the techniques of Japanese traditional craft can be shared, and works with Japanese makers and small businesses seeking opportunities overseas.

Here, verified records, editorial selection and commerce remain connected so maker, place, material, technique, use and care stay visible from discovery to ownership.

OUR PHILOSOPHY

Taking Japanese craftsmanship to the world. Expanding its possibilities.

BRANDJapan works with craftspeople and manufacturing businesses across Japan. By bringing together skills and knowledge rooted in different regions, we respond to diverse needs in Japan and abroad, pursue new forms of making grounded in traditional craft, and help carry valuable techniques into the future.

MAKER FIRST

The maker is the beginning, not the footnote.

Every object begins with decisions: what material to use, how to shape it, which traces of the process to retain, and how it should live in the hand or home. BRAND JAPAN keeps the maker or workshop—and the decisions behind the work—visible wherever they can be verified.

We do not borrow a maker’s story to decorate ours. We build the store around their work.

HOW WE SELECT

Four questions before an object enters the selection.

Beauty may begin the encounter. These questions determine whether an object belongs at BRAND JAPAN.

01

Who made it—and what can we verify?

We look for a clear connection to a maker, workshop or place, and publish only the provenance we can confirm.

02

Why this material, in this form?

We consider how material, form and function belong together—and what those choices reveal about the work.

03

What does the technique make possible?

Technique matters when it shapes an object’s expression, utility or longevity—not merely as a label.

04

How can it live meaningfully today?

We ask how the object can be understood, used, displayed and cared for in contemporary life beyond Japan.

OBJECT PASSPORT

Know what you are bringing home.

For each object offered by BRAND JAPAN, the Object Passport brings together the information we have confirmed: maker or workshop, place, material, technique, dimensions, individual variation, intended use and care. Information still being confirmed is identified as such.

FROM JAPAN, WITH CLARITY

Fewer unknowns, even from afar.

Distance should not turn a considered purchase into a leap of faith. BRAND JAPAN makes confirmed dimensions, materials, intended use, individual variation and care visible. Details that vary by product or destination are stated where they apply.

KNOW WHAT WILL ARRIVE

Dimensions, materials, finish and individual variation.

KNOW HOW IT CAN LIVE

Intended use, placement, handling and care.

KNOW WHAT PURCHASE REQUIRES

Availability, delivery, returns and product-specific conditions.

HOW WE WORK · A LIVING ARCHIVE

Context is gathered, not invented.

Wherever possible, BRAND JAPAN begins with the maker, workshop, product record or another primary source. We distinguish confirmed facts from editorial interpretation, document the context relevant to ownership, and connect that record to the object. When confirmed information changes, the record should change with it. A Living Archive is not a fixed story. It is a record that can deepen as new information is confirmed, while keeping fact, interpretation and the unknown clearly distinct.

01 / SOURCE

Begin with a primary source

Start with the maker, workshop, product record or another source closest to the work.

02 / VERIFY

Separate fact from interpretation

Confirm what can be supported and leave unknown information visibly unresolved.

03 / DOCUMENT

Record what ownership requires

Document maker, place, material, technique, dimensions, use, variation and care where relevant.

04 / CONNECT

Connect the record to the object

Keep the relevant context available from discovery through purchase and ownership.
